Weekly Waffle #307
14th January 2023
As promised I’m back for another week, although considering it is only the second week of the year so it’s not that much of an achievement. I’ve spent quite a bit of time away from home this week so haven’t had a lot of hobby time but I’ve tried to put my time to good use. With the Alliance fleet progressing at a steady pace I’ve been thinking about how to go about painting the Hunt for Prometheus box set which has been sitting I’m my pile of shame for some time. For the Enhanced I’m thinking of going with a pale blue for the hull and a dull metal for the weapons and fittings. Then using a dark wooden colour for the decking. My thinking is that the pale blue harks back to the Covenant of the Antarctic which was the original name for the faction when Spartan had the IP.
Although I’ve been wracking my brains to think of a colour scheme for for the Commonwealth and I’m still none the wiser about what to do. My existing Russian Federation fleet, which is the original name for the Commonwealth, is a pale, almost white, grey. The existing colour scheme just seems a bit bland compared to the Alliance I’ve been painting. And I want something that will pop in the same way but still have some ties to my existing fleet. Space Wolf grey is the closest I’ve come up with but I think this will be to similar to what I have I mind for the Enlightened. But I still have some time to think this through before I will in a position to start work on them.
Getting back to the Alliance fleet I’ve managed to get the red completed and I’m really liking how it’s looking. I’ve also looked back at some of the images I have for my old Republique of France fleet and I can’t believe just how close the two look. I was trying to go with something that looked similar but I’m really happy that they are so close. In theory it should allow me to use my old ships and new interchangeably. Anyway back to this weeks painting I’ve also managed to get some work done on the decoration with the gold really starting to bring the ships to life and to give some gravitas to the fleet.
The closer I seem to get to being finished and the longer each step seems to take. It’s just that the details have to be right and it takes time to get them right. But it’s worth the effort to get it right first time because it’s a lot more work to fix any issues at this stage. All of the details on the test model are complete though and I’m very happy with it and it won’t be long before the rest of the fleet catches up.
I’ve also spent quite a bit of time working on the images for the site. Lots of them have no information with them to describe what that image is such as alt text or titles. So I’ve been spending time doing through the images, starting with the existing Dystopian Wars ones, and adding this information to them. It’s a simple thing to do but it does take quite a lot of time so whilst I’m making good progress but it has been slow process. And there is a long way to go before I get everything updated for all of the galleries. But I am going it making sure that I add this information to all of the new images that I add to the site. So I hopefully I won’t have to go through this process again or at least not for some time.
On the subject of keeping the site up to date and trying to get a little bit more content I’ve been working on a new painting guide. It will be in keeping with the existing ones and isn’t intended as a full on painting tutorial. There are lots of people out there that can do that much better than I can. I’m hoping that they will serve more as an inspiration. If one of you sees something you like you can see how I did it and then either use the same method or adapt what I did to suit your needs. I’ve seen lots of things out there and wondered how someone did what they did so this is my way of sharing a bit of that. And whilst they are basic, because that’s my level of painting, and I think anyone can make use of them.
I’ve also been trying to plan out some projects for the rest of the year. Nothing to serious but as I touched on before I’ve got the Dystopian Wars Hunt for the Prometheus box set that I really want to paint up. And at the same time I would like to do some painting guides to sit along side it. I also want to play more Carnevale this year and as enjoyed painting the Guild so much I’m really tempted to look at expanding my collection with some Patricians. Just because I like the look of them and think they will be fun to paint. I’m also sure there will be other things that pop up throughout the year that I think look shiny and just have to have a dabble at.
There is also prospect of building and painting something to enter into Golden Deamon. And no I’ve not completely lost my mind. Last time me and Pete were at Adepticon we said if we came back we would paint something up and enter. Now I’m not sure if we are going again next year but if I’m to stand any chance of not making a complete fool of myself I need to start thinking about it sooner rather than later. But I’ll give you an update on that one as and when we decide if we are going to make the trip across the pond again.
Game night resumes next week where we will see if Chris can hold on to his lead. Or will someone go rogue and try and take him out. His car has quite a lot of damage and someone with no damage could take him out of the game. But we will have to wait and see how that one plays out. On the hobby front I will continuing with the Alliance ships and really trying to get them finished before the next update. I not sure how successful that will be but I’m going to give it a go. Put a bit of pressure on myself to get the first project of the year finished off.
That’s it for this weeks update. I hope you all have a good week, whatever you have planned especially if that is a hobby or gaming related, and if it’s not then what has gone wrong. But regardless enjoy yourself, stay safe and I hope to see you all again at the same time next week.
