No game night this week so the Alchemists got a breather but they will be back out again for the next game. So this week’s update is all hobby time and it’s all Guild Ball. The first thing I have been working on is a new goal for the Alchemist. My initial idea for this was to see if I could make use of lighting kit I have to give sort of ethereal glow to the goal. So I built up the outer disc in such a way that I could add a fibber optic strip in there in the hope that some of the light would bleed out and illuminate the rest of the goal. I practice it only works if the ambient light it very low so not really as useful as I originally planned. Having said that I think it’s still looking ok although I’m not sure yet just how I’m going to mount it on to a base or what details need adding to bring it to life. There’s a good chance it might just sit there for a while until I get the spark of inspiration I need to finish it off.
Next up we have the Butchers. The have been sitting a nearly finished state for some time now and I’ve been dreading the thought of having to paint plaid or tartan on them. So I’ve spent the weeks avoiding the prospect and finishing off all of the little details and getting them based. But now it’s got to crunch time with all of the details finished I have a set of models that I could easily field in a game.
The problem I have is that whilst I like how they look at the moment I have always envisaged them with a plaid colour scheme. So if I leave them as they are I will always look at them and feel that they aren’t quite finished. But I don’t know if I have the skill to paint a decent plaid patter on them. I feel confident that I could do this on a nice flat surface but for these it would need to follow the flow and folds of the material and this is the bit that I’m not sure about. At the end of the day it’s not like I’m doing this as a commission with a delivery date, so if it all goes wrong I can always strip them down and start again. But that is a lot is a lot of work.
I suppose it all comes down to the fact that I want to improve my painting, which I do, then at some point I have to step outside of my comfort zone. And this is really stepping out of my comfort zone.
I’ve also had a couple of sets of movement templates delivered this week. The first are for Guild Ball and just simple straight distance sticks. When used with the shorter, right angle type ones I already have I should have everything covered. I find they are just much easier to use than a tape measure.
The other set are for X-Wing. Again not a lot you can really say about a set of distance templates. Other than it was a faff to peel off the protective backing they come with. I think it’s what they leave on whilst the laser is etching them and because of the patterns on them it won’t just peel off in a sing neat go. Oh no you have to sit there picking little pieces off each one of them. Not the end of the world I know it just wound me up whilst I was doing it. Having said that I do think they look very nice so it was all worth it in the end.
Well that’s it for this week. have a good weekend and a happy weeks gaming and if you come back next week you should see either some finished Brewers or a Brewers team who have been for a swim in some paint stripper.
