Weekly Waffle # 384 – Steezy
28th June 2025
For this week’s Weekly Waffle my hobby update is basically going to be a variation on last week. Still really busy at work so limited hobby time during the week. Although I do have a week off planned for the first week in July. Me and the wife are going to do some serious relaxing. Not sure if I will get any hobby time in but there won’t be a Weekly Waffle next week. All back to me not doing updates when I have time off with the wife. You’ve got to get your priorities right.
So before I get onto what will be quite a short hobby update, I want to have a bit of a waffle. I’ve been doing this blog on and off now for nearly ten years. January 15 was the first weekly waffle. And some of the things I was writing about, such as infinity are still going strong.
Some others, such as Guild Ball, have sadly fallen by the wayside. I thought Guild Ball was a really good game and was the first thing I really backed on kickstarter, going for five teams. I even did a few demo games to try and get others involved. All in all it was a game I really liked on all levels and was sad to see it go.
I can’t say I was surprised when the guys at Steam Forged games moved on though. By then it had moved from a miniatures game to more of a board game that used miniatures. A bit like zombiside. You bought a team and it came in coloured plastic so you didn’t need to paint it. But the quality of the miniatures, whilst good for the game, weren’t really up there from a painters perspective.
From a business point of view it was the right thing to do. And they have continued to thrive as a company. It made entry into the game easy and encouraged people to play. But I just fell out of love with the miniatures. Then they retired the game, although there are still lots of online resources if you still wanted to play. So hats off to them for that.
Anyway was pondering what to paint next, because lets face it what you have lined up is never right, and I got looking as some Guild Ball images. And I got nostalgic. So I then started to have a look and see if you could find the minis anywhere. Lots of web stores said they had them when you actually try to check anything out you get the dreaded ‘awaiting restock’. Which to me means we don’t have it but will take your money and then try and get for you.
So I ended up on the Steam Forge Games website and they did have minis available to order. They have lots that you can pick up as STL’s so if you have printer you are covered. I don’t so had rely on ordering printed mins. But I took the plunge and ordered a Guild I didn’t already have. Then it was just a case of sitting back and waiting for them to turn up.
Then it was just a case of waiting for them to turn up which is where things got a little dicy. Steam Forge are a UK based company I was ordering from the UK but it has taken quite a while for them turn up. So much so that I was beginning to think that I had been scammed. All in all from ordering to having the minis land on my door it took two months. But they did arrive.
And it is worth me pointing out that whilst I was expecting some not very good plastic single piece minis what arrived was a pleasant surprise. They are one piece minis but they are very nice printed minis. Much better quality than the last lot of Plastics I saw. So as I say I was very pleasantly surprised .
I’m not going to say much more about them now. I’m going to save that for when I get round to painting them but if anyone is interested in getting into the game you can still get minis from Steam Forge Games. They are good minis just be mindful that if you don’t have a 3d printer it may take a while for the minis to arrive at your doo.
So on the hobby front this week I have been continuing to work on my Orc Ninja’s. Slow progress but it is progress. The only thing that has changed is the detail colour, which in this case is Orange. Considering all of the Votann I have painted this year I’m quite happy painting Orange. Although this guy has also acquired a skate board along the way so he is mobile in his own right.
That is an exceptionally short hobby update but there are only so many times you can stand reading the same thing when comes to how did I paint the orc skin and black cloth. But what do you think of the end result.
You can see more Ork miniatures at my gallery here.
That’s all I have for you this week. Another short update which I’m hopping won’t become the norm. Work has just been so busy I haven’t had the time to get a full size update completed for you. As I said earlier there won’t be an update next week because I’m on holiday but I will back on the 12th July.
Until then I hope you all keep safe and enjoy whatever life brings your way.
