Weekly Waffle #369 – A Full Hearth
1st March 2025
For this week’s Weekly Waffle I have once again been juggling hobby time with travel for work. I have come to the conclusion that if I had some sort of steady rig, like a camera man, then I would be able to get so much more hobby done each week. But trying to paint whilst on a train, especially a train in the north of England, just isn’t a viable option. It’s good to get some reading in or catch up on a pod cast or two but hobby time is a no. Having said that it does give me some time to actually write the Weekly Waffle. I just need a bit of discipline to get the work done.
Having laid the ground work this week’s Weekly Waffle brings you more orange. As I mentioned last week the aim was to get the rest of the Hearthkyn Warriors finished so that I can share the full squad. And I’m happy to say that I’ve managed to do that. I haven’t done anything different with this second batch than I did with the first. After all they are one squad so I want them all to look the same. So I’ve followed all of the same processes even down to the point that I needed to look at the pictures from last week to work out which were batch one and which were batch two. Didn’t want to be cheating you on the picture front and passing off last week’s work as new and fresh for this week.
The only extra thing I have done this week is to paint up some alternative head options. I painted all of the bare heads at the same time and them being magnetised allows me to swap them out if wanted to. The main reason for doing this was so that I could have some or all of the squad with helmets instead of bare heads. But instead of going with the helmets that came with the Warriors I’ve gone with some I got from Tarro Miniatures. Just because I liked the look of them. But having done these I’m now thinking that it might be nice to paint up the GW helmets to offer even more variation to the squad.
I think that the different heads, or in this case helmets just gives a completely different feel to the units. I’ve kept the colour pallet the same so the helmet itself is the same blue I use on the shoulder pads. With the visor being the same magenta going into pink that I have used on the equipment screens. I really like how they have turned out and can’t really make my mind up whether I preferrer the bare heads or the helmets. I think both look really good and I’d be happy to field them in either configuration. The only thing with doing this for one unit is that I’m now going to have to do it for everything. So more work.
But what do you think of these guys?
We then have the full squad without their helmets on followed by the full squad with helmets on.

I’m really happy with how this squad has turned out and I really think that a couple of squads like this would look really good on the table top. That is a long way off but it’s something to think about. I will need a lot of other units to be finished before that is going to happen. But I do already have a second squad built and ready for paint. I just don’t wand to the do them straight away because I want to paint something a bit different and not get stuck in a rut doing the same thing week on week.
That doesn’t mean that I’ve abandoned the orange yet. Just that a I want to paint up a different unit which will give me different challenges. I’m not sure whether I will be going with a Kill Team unit or doing another Necromumda unit but either way they are going to be orange.
Whichever option I choose I think I’m going to try and do something a little bit different. Up to now I’ve been painting the minis clean. By that I mean I’ve not added any sort of real weathering or battle damage. So I think it’s now time to step out of my comfort zone and try something new.
So whichever unit I pick next I’m going to add some battle damage in the form of chips and scratches. I’m not really sure how to go about it and it won’t be over the top. I just want to start nudging myself out of the comfort zone and trying to do something a little bit different. Or different for me. The key thing for me is that I have to rally try and force myself not to worry about what it ends up looking like.
I obviously want it to look good but I’m not going to get it perfect on the first go. As long as I don’t make it look stupid then I will be happy. Then I can start to do this with each following unit and given a bit of time I can go back and update my existing units.
I’ve also been thinking about some alternative Necromunda units and have ordered a couple of minis that I think could work nicely as count as mins, and would look really cool. As long as I can paint them well enough.
That’s one of the great things about our club in that everyone likes the rule of cool. So as long as it’s nice and clear what each mini is supposed to be there isn’t a problem getting them into a game. And if they turn out ok they will certainly be cool.
That’s it for this week. There isn’t going to be an update next week because I’m away with wife. We have a long weekend in London, so as I said at the start of the year I’m not going to break myself by trying to do too much in a week. I want to keep the mojo going and little breaks like this are all going to help with that as the year progresses.
Having said that I may just find myself finding some inspiration whilst I’m away. You never know when you pass by an interesting shop or two.
So until Saturday the 15th March I hope you all keep safe and enjoy whatever you get up too.
