Weekly Waffle #336 – I’m thirsty !
8th June 2024
For this week’s Weekly Waffle I’m going to mix my metaphors and cross streams somewhat. I’ve been continuing on my Necromunda journey and to a large extent I’ve stayed with the Water Guild I introduced you to last week. Although it has taken a slight tangent. So where is this opening ramble going, and to be honest I’m not sure myself.. But what I have for you this week is a Hired Gun that fits perfectly into the Water Guild theme.
Welcome to Eyros.
Eyros was once an underhive dome-rigger from Cogtown, one of the sweating, emaciated souls responsible for repairing the rusting pipe networks that fed the dismal settlement. Deep down in the sump wells, close to hive bottom, he found and donned a strange archaeo-rig which, though it gave him strength and life, it also gave him a burning thirst. As it turned out, while water can be found in many things, few things in Necromunda have quite as much as humans. Eyros leaves only dust and scrap in his wake, searching endlessly for fresh victims from which to strip every morsel of fluid. These days it is hard to tell how much of Eyros is left under the archaeo-cybernetics, and no telling what Eyros will become once the archaeotech is done with him.
He was the perfect Hired Gun to use as a way of extending my Water Guild because he fits so well. I use the same colour scheme of blue, orange and copper which I think works really well for this guy. I have once again used the same approach of sketching out the different shades of blue and then trying to smooth out the transitions. My feeling here is that I haven’t pushed things as far as I did for the pervious models and this time I think the blending is much better. Not great but better which is step in the right direction for learning a new skill.
The copper and orange were done in the same way and I think they are colours that just work well and really fit the feel of the model. But there were a couple of things that I did differently here. There are lots of different etched out elements that give some interesting panel lines. So wanting to try and make this guy a little different I used some white ink, which is a product I’m just starting to use. I filled in all of these areas on the copper with white ink to try and make them stand out. I then went over this with an orange contrast paint so that I could adds some interest but also keep the same colour scheme. I wasn’t sure how it would work and i’m happy with the end result and is something I will certainly try on future models.
I mentioned last week that I wasn’t particularly happy with the look of red weapons on my Water Guild and that I was thinking of changing up and re-painting them in black. So this time I did use black and I think it looks a lot better. Which now means I need to take some time out and go back and paint them in black. I really don’t know why it makes such a big difference but it really does look much better in black and I have to say that really surprised me just how different it looked.
Something that did surprise me when I came to painting this guy was the time it took me in comparison to the previous Water Guild minis I’ve painted I seemed to fly through this one. I think some of it is because I painted him on the back of the others so I was in the flow for painting these colours. Or maybe it was that I was only painting a single mini and that means that things just flow in a more natural way. From start to finish was just a few hours and I really like the end result. But what do you guys think.
You can find more Necromunda mins from a few faction on my Necromunda Gallery here.
I do have the official Water Guild or more accurately the Mercator Nautical Syphoning Delegation from what was Forge World. I’m still getting my head around everything now being under the Warhammer badge and not GW and Forge World. But I think I’m going to have a break from painting blue and orange and try something a little bit different. I’m not a hundred percent sure just what that will be at the moment. But I do have a quite a few Hired Hands that I can be working and I just need to decide which one or ones, because some are sets, to paint up next.
My thinking at the moment is that I’m going to go up market and get away from some of the hive scum and look at the House Greim Military Attache. This would be another couple of models in the form of a Krieg Mester and a Jagerkin bodyguard. The real difference here will be the colour scheme and that is the only bit that is causing me waver on my commitment to paint these next. That is because the art work on the Warhammer site has a lot of white on these guys. I really don’t like working with white.
Although the thought of painting white scars me it’s one of the colours I need to do more of or I will never get better at it. And there are also some very nice contrast colours that are in the official colour scheme that should really give them a nice pop. I might also get me in the mood for picking up and painting some Spiers when they are eventually released.
Still on the Necromunda front I know the gang that I want to paint next and I have the minis lined up for that first basic gang. I also have an colour scheme lined up for them that isn’t the standard box art but doesn’t deviate that much so the feel will still be the same. As I have previously mentioned I’ve got more hired guns that I could be working on. So my plan for next week will be make sure I have something painted up and ready for the weekly waffle. But I’m also going to try and get the minis I have cleaned up and built so that I can start painting if the mood takes me. I may even try to get a bunch of them primed so they really are ready to go with colour whenever the mood takes me. All part of trying to keep my mojo topped up and flowing.
Thats it for this week’s weekly waffle but I will be back next week with something to share with you, even if it’s not what I was just waffling on about. Until then I hope you all have a good week whatever you are getting up to . Have fun and I hope to see you all back here next week.
