Weekly Waffle #303
22nd October 2022
Another week and another unit well underway. I had a desire to paint up a Wych squad for some odd reason but when I went into the GW store in Manchester they didn’t have one so after a quick gander around I picked up something else. And that something else was a box of Corsair’s for KillTeam. I just liked the look of them and as far as I’m aware they are just a stand alone unit so I’m not going to get caught up with some desire to paint a new army.
I’ve used the same method as before but this time I’ve actually managed to take some pictures as I’ve been going along. Not all of the same mini because I keep forgetting to take pictures at the end of each step but I’m hoping there are enough here to show how it works for me. Again on the timing front I’m not being as fast as others here. But my aim is to get the unit finished, ideally within a week, to a standard I’m happy with. Going at the pass of others that would see this unit finished in about three to three and half hours. I’m going to be way over that time line. I’ve not counted build and priming in that time because like I mentioned last week you really need to leave them overnight once you have primed them to allow the primer to cure properly. I’ve done it without waiting but have always ended up lifting some of the primer during the dry brush. Leaving these overnight resulted in no lifting this time round.
I think I spent about an hour and a half to do all of the dry brushing. But I wasn’t rushing, in fact I was listening to Mortis, book five in the Siege of Terra series which has me hooked at the moment. But I have to say whilst I’m enjoying the story and having been a GW player for decades getting a blow by blow account of the Siege has been long awaited. However I have to say that I’m not a fan of all of the chaos elements of the books. I know it’s absolutely key to the story and you can’t tell the story without it. If I was actually reading the story then I would skim read a lot of these sections. However listening to it on Audible means I can’t do this. It’s not going to stop me enjoying the story, just an observation for anyone else who is going to listen to them. And I wholeheartedly recommend that you do because they are really good.
With the dry brushing complete it was time to start adding colour. I was contemplating going with the classic Wych colours but I still want to paint some Wyches at some point so I decided to just go with the colours on the box. In fact when I was looking at the different build options I chose to mirror the box art. Using magnets would make them more versatile in the future but the real key for me at the moment is trying not to get bogged down in the details. Momentum is key for me at the moment and keeping things simple is the way to go for me.
Even keeping it simple I’ve not got as much done as I would have liked this week. We have had a major issue at work that has eaten a lot of time this week with lots of time spent on the train. Not good for painting but good for time spent on Audible listening to the Siege of Terra. Then we were at a wedding on Thursday. Absolutely fantastic day but I was rough yesterday so again not much hobby taking place. But the mojo is still there so I’m still feeling good with the progress I’m making.
So even though I’ve not got a lot done I have started to add some colour to the corsairs and I’m liking how it’s going so far. It’s not as much fun painting a unit, even one with as much variation as this one. Because it does feel like a process of painting one colour then the next as opposed to painting each one differently. But I think ten is a manageable number without getting board and loosing the enjoyment of painting.
On the kit-bash front I’ve not done a lot but I have made a start. I don’t have a complete picture of how I want this turn out but I suppose that is the proper Ork way to do things. The other thing that has slowed me down a bit has been trying to find parts. Since I’ve cleaned up my work area and boxed up all my bits box’s I’ve been found myself knowing I have a part I want to use but trying to remember where it is has been another challenge. But I’m stubborn so once I get an idea in my head trying to change my mind is like a tanker trying to turn. So the result has been slow progress but like the painting I have been enjoying the process.
The plan for the following week is to try and finish the Corsair’s. Or at least to make a lot more progress on them. I don’t want to put any pressure on myself because I’m actually enjoying my hobby time at the moment and I want to keep it that way. I’m also looks to get some more work in on the kit-bash but that might be a bit slower. Mainly because I’ve got a system worked out for my painting where I can leave my work space clean and tidy at the end of a session with little effort. But I’ve not got that worked out yet for builds, so I’m burning time getting things set up and put away which takes a little bit of the fun away. I’ve also picked up a couple of new paints that I think may be good for the slap chop method which I’ll try and do a bit of a review of. But I have to finish the Corsair’s before I start anything new.
That’s it for this week. I’m about to pop out the door, going for a fry up with my dad and then hopping to get some hobby time in this afternoon. Whatever you have plans for the week I hope it goes well and would love to see you all back here again next Saturday to see how things have progressed.
