Weekly Waffle #216

This week has been another mixed bag with me getting quite a lot done although I don’t have lots of pictures to share with you. Some but not a lot. First off this week was that I managed to make it to game night although I didn’t actually get a game, but it did act as cheer leader for some Necromunda action. Explain the games.

On the hobby front I’ve made a bit more progress on my barbarian with the leather sections now complete along with the turquoise cloth sections. The weapons are nearly there but there but still need more highlighting. Overall though I’m happy with the progress I’ve made on it, especially considering the amount of time I’ve actually spent painting this week.

I’ve spent quite a bit of time working on more of the maps and have made some real progress on them. To the point that I’m now going to have to go back and play around with the once I’ve already completed. The bulk of the work I’ve been doing this week has been linked to something that our DM has lined up for us in the not to distant future so I don’t want to share it here as it would spoil things if they do actually get used. Now whilst I’ve built the maps I’ve made them modular so that they can be put together in a number of ways so that even though I’ve built them the layout will still be a surprise for me, which is something I’m quite happy about. I’ve also been working out how to make both circular and curvy walls so that can inject a bit of interest into future plans. One thing I’ve spent a lot of time on this week has been producing some test pieces that try out lots of new ideas but that at the same time can be used as a generic building. The one below is my take on some sort of library or university space. The idea is that is underground and everyone gets checked in and out by the librarian on duty as they pass their desk. There are then individual study rooms that can be used once someone has picked the book(s) they want to study. As they are too valuable to be allowed out of the room. I’m really happy with how this one has turned out and I’ve learnt a loads of new skills this week which gives a great buzz.

Back in the physical world I’ve also made a start on my Titans, or at least I’ve started to do some test pieces for my Titans. At game night on Tuesday Al was rummaging through some old sprews and throwing out the things he had no use for. Amongst them were some Team Yankee bits which I decided to save. I think they are the turret tops of either Chieftains or Challengers but either way to me they would be good stand ins for the armour plates on a Titan. This way I could do some colour scheme testing on something other than a flat piece of plastic. Now I had a good idea of what I wanted to do but I needed to do these test pieces to see if it was actually achievable and I think from what I have done so far it is. My plan is to go with something of an Alpha legion look, partly because I think it will look cool, well mainly because I think it will look cool but also because I can then use them as either loyalist or chaos. I’ve also looked at how I can add some accent colour to distinguish between different Titans although you will see from the examples below that my masking still needs a little bit of work. I’ve had a few tests with each one getting nearer and nearer to what I was looking for so I’m now feeling happy with the process so it’s nearly time to start building some god machines.

Also this week Google has been upsetting me by reminding me that this time last year I was in the good old US of A at Adepticon. Pictures of strolling around Chicago and eating deep pan pizza from Giordano’s so I’m really envious of those of you who are there again this year. A few of us have been a couple of times now and have fallen into something of a two-year cycle, so not there this year but maybe next year. So I raised the idea at game night but as Al and Pete will be celebrating something of a milestone birthday over the next 18 months they are planning on riding Route 66 next year so Adepticon isn’t really on the cards. Now I’m not trusted on anything that has a motor and two wheels, only being trusted with peddle power so it’s not a trip I will joining in with. But it got me thinking that I might still look to attend next year.

Having been couple of times I’m happy that whilst it might not be just a much fun as having a trip with group of friends you are attending an event with lots of like-minded people so it will still be a good trip. It might also make the booking process a little easier only needing to book tickets, games and seminars for one as opposed to a group, and anyone who has used the booing system will understand that. So my thinking at the moment is that I will be there next year and I’ll be looking to cram my time full of hobby events as opposed to games. I really enjoyed the ones I did last time and the chance to do more would be great. It’s also another chance to challenge myself to enter something into Crystal Brush, although it is only about the taking part for me. But all in all I think it could be a good trip.

Until then I’ll just look forward to see what comes out of this year’s event which will be kicking off on Wednesday when I will really be jealous as all the pictures and stories start appearing on twitter. So until next week I hope you all have a great week, for those of you attending Adepticon I hope you have a great one and I’ll catch you all again next week.
