Weekly Waffle #201

It’s not been the best of weeks for hobby time this week. We have a change freeze at work over the Christmas period so everyone is clamouring to get things done before that kicks in. For me that has been a lot of travel this week which meant I missed out on games night this week. Having said that I have manged to get some hobby time in. What’s more I’ve really knuckled down and got quite a lot of work done in the time I had. The aim for this week was to try and get the first round of highlights completed on the bomber and I’m happy to say that I’ve managed to do that and then a few extra bits. So first up we have all the sections of the bomber now have a base colour and a first highlight and if I wanted I could probably use it as it is but there are still lots of bits to do, but it’s been a good weeks work.

With the first highlights completed I wanted to have a change and get some of the details completed so I started with Top Gun. In this case this the grot gun turret that sits above the bomb bay. This was mainly to give me a change from painting red but once it was finished lots of the work now can’t be seen. The hardest part was probably painting the metallic parts of the canopy, which ironically hides a lot of the work underneath. That was mainly because it’s such as smooth surface it take a few layers to get things covered and you have to not rush things, or else it will all go wrong. I’m happy with how it’s turned out and it’s one part ticked off the to do list.

Then it was time for the Waaaagh capacitor, or at least that’s what I’m calling it. This sits just behind the cockpit and offers a chance to do something a bit different. As the rest of the model is going to end up getting a coat of satin varnish to dull everything down this was a chance to do something with a bit of bling. So going back to me trusty Ghost Tint colours I’ve applied them over a metallic base and then given them a gloss varnish which just makes it pop. I think this is my favourite part so far.

That’s it for this week and work permitting my plan for next week is to break the bomber down into it’s core parts and work on the details one by one. My thinking behind this approach is that I’ll stand more chance of feeling like I’m making progress which in turn will keep me going. The only real fly in the ointment is that it’s a friends birthday this weekend and it’s a significant one so I can miss it. So that means I will have to spend tonight in the pub drinking beer so there is a very good chance I won’t be a position to get much done tomorrow. But there’s the res of the week. So until next week I hope you have a good time and I’ll see you all again next week.
