Weekly Waffle #197

I’m going to start this week off with a gaming update. Managed to make if for games night this week and we have also started to play some games of Kill Team. We should have started these some time ago but for various reasons the date kept slipping but Pete has put his foot down and we are now rolling. The plan was for Pete to play Mark but as things turned out Pete couldn’t make so I gave my Gene Stealer cult their first outing, and every one of them died. Yep that’s right it was as a completed white wash against Marks Thousand Sons. It didn’t help that the first marker he captured turned out to be the marker and I then had to walk through a hail of fire whilst he kept backing away. I did finally mange to get into combat and killed one of his guys, moral victory to me, but that was it. Every one of my guys was dead before the end of turn five. But I did enjoy the game. Turned out there aren’t enough points in the starter box for a hundred point game so I’m going to have to get a few extra models to bulk things up a bit for the next game. On the plus side as it was supposed to be Pete playing I’m crediting him with the loss and adopting the delusional stand point that I’m still undefeated at kill team. Works for me!

No D&D this week and we’ve not got a game planned for this weekend so it looks like we are going have a couple of weeks off. It’s not all bad as I’ve been tasked with drawing up gaming table. Or more precisely a table topper to go on top of Al’s existing dining table will give us a bit more space for all or odds and ends. I’ve got the rough sketches done just need to get everything to scale with diagrams so that it can be knocked up by someone who knows what they are actually doing. This has to be done before the next game or Anna is going to kill me and I’m not sure if she means me, my character or both, so I really need to get it done.

On the hobby front I’ve made quite a bit of progress on the Bomma. My goal was to try and get the front part of the fuselage completed and I’ve been mostly successful with this. I’ve had a bit of a rethink about the way I have been working and to put it into building terms I’ve been trying do a final fix before I’ve got the block work completed so this week my goal has been to forget the fine details and to crack on with the block work. To this end I’ve been really successful and I’ve not only blocked in the front fuselage but I’ve also joined up all three sections and I’m now working on making them look like they belong. As things stand the fuselage will just about fit in a KR case but I need to have a good think about what I do with the wings.

The problem I’ve had is that ambition has outstripped practicality. Because I’ve built all of the part separately when I’ve come to put everything together it’s turned out to be a lot bigger than I thought. As you can see from the wings here I think they look about the right size for the rest of the model but it means that if they are fitted to the rest of the model then there is no way it will fit in a KR case. As things stand they are a very snug fit with the fuselage so I think I can get away with not gluing them in place and just fitting them it’s in use.

I want to add a bit more gubbins to these along with suitably orky warning glyphs just to give it a bit more character. I’ve also got a bag full of bombs and rockets that will be fitted under the wings to make it look like it can really deliver a punch, if it ever makes it as far as a target. Although I have to say I have no idea how anything that I’ve built here relates in any way to the rules for a flyer. It certainly won’t be very WYSIWYG but I’m working on the principle that if it’s the only flyer I have on the table, and I’ve no desire to do another at the moment, then it shouldn’t cause to much trouble. After all it’s an ork creation and no two should ever be the same.

The only draw back on the build is that when I shared what I had done with the Meks on game night they weren’t very happy with the wings. Thought they were a bit weedy. So after a bit of pondering it was decided that I need to add another set of wing so it’s going to end up with something of an X-Wing idea. Or more accurately an upside down K-Wing. I’m sure yet just how I’m going to do it but I’ve been given my instructions so there go.

On the wider ork front I’ve ordered the new codex but I’ve hung off ordering any of the new buggies at the moment. I do really like them and will get some at some point in the not too distant future. But for now I don’t’ want to get side tracked so I’m not going to order any until I’ve finished the flyer build. I may get some before I paint it but not before it’s built. Honest! Although I may order the workshop as that would fit in with something I was looking to do last year but never got round to. Ideas within ideas, it’s a wonder I ever get anything finished.

So the plan for this week is to try and get all of the extra panels I need to finish off the fuselage completed so that it will be ready for the details. I also need to get busy with the Milli Put and make some more nuts/bolts and rivets to fix all of the new panels and prats on the model. It’s these little bits that I think make all the difference to the finished built. The only real problem with this is the time it takes for the Milli Put to set before I can make the next batch and I’m going to need a lot of them before this project is finished.

And that’s it for this week. I think I’ve finally made some good progress here with what is effectively a rolling chaise completed. It fits on the base and doesn’t fall over which is always a bonus. The plan for this week is to just keep plugging away and try and all the key parts of the build completed. Then it gives me another week to work on the details. So until next week have a good time and I hope to see you all again next week.
