Wednesday Night Registration:
Queuing was a real pain with the initial queue running up the lobby of the hotel but once you got into the convention space the queue was split up by surname. Not a bad option on the face of it but the queue for P to Z was operating on a completely different time scale. To put it into context Al and Darren split out into a different que from me and Pete. They were able to attend the GW event whilst we were still in the queue. Same number of people it’s just that it took a lot longer to process them in our queue that it did in the others. Having said that being English we enjoy queueing nearly as much as we involve drinking so I just chose to think that I got more out of the experience than those in the other queues.
The wait was worth it however as the swag bag was excellent this year. Granted you needed to pay for it but everyone got a copy of Guild Ball Kick off which on it’s own covers the cost of the bag. I’ll do a separate update with more details on the bag but it was nice and will keep me busy for some time once I get home.
Thursday: Day 1
I only had one course on Thursday which was in the afternoon so I spent the morning having a walk round and getting a feel for what was going on. There was a big queue for the vendor hall so we steered clear for the hour or so before taking the plunge with the promise of not buying anything on day one. That lasted until I got to Forge World and found out that they had a copy of the Legio Custodes Tribune Ixion Hale model for sale. I’ve been after this for a while and not having any plans for a trip to Notting in the near future I decided to go for it and picked him up. I’ve also lined up a few other models that I really like the look of and think will make nice painting projects but I decided to retain an element of will power and held off on buying them today. But that will probably change tomorrow.
The once course I had today was ‘level up your painting’ by Michelle Blastenbrie which was really interesting and not at all what I was expecting. We were concentrating on layering and I will do more of write up once I get home but it really got us all thinking about how to go about highlighting and shading particularly using colours that you wouldn’t think would work but that actually give really good results.
Then it was time for something to eat and few beers. Days three and four are quite course heavy for me so I don’t know if I’ll get another update tomorrow but I will try and get at least one more in whilst we are here. The other thing from today was that I entered my model into Crystal Brush so it now sitting in the cabinet to be picked apart by a very discerning audience.
I’ve taken a few pick and will share them but again I think that will be once we get home. Mainly due to there being very limited internet access and what there is isn’t the fastest.
Have fun and keep watching for the next update.
