It’s been a bit of mixed bag this week with me being back on the road again for a few days so no game night this week. Although we did get another D&D session in last Saturday. The numbers were a bit depleted so it ended up being a bit of side adventure which was a lot of fun. You know your party is in trouble though when they refer to my character, a Halfling monk and the fighting tank of the party. Needless to say we tried to avoid as much trouble as we could and made it into a very good fact finding session. That way when we are back to full strength next week no one has missed out any of key events and it will be nice and easy to bring them all up to speed on what we have been able to find out so far.
On the hobby front I’ve ground to halt on Jynz so I’ve spent a bit of time on Nero, or more specially I’ve spend some time on the back for Nero and on Septimus. I’ve tried a couple of options for the base before settling on this one which was done using Vallejo snow effect. Yes you did read that correctly. It goes on a bit like a gritty paste which was exactly what I was looking for by way of texture it was just the colour that was completely wrong. So a few different layers of browns to give it that hard sandy feel I think an arena would have and there you have it. A textured disk that will fit into the standard Arena Rex base.
With the base progressing I then turned my attention to working on Septimus by trying to block out the different areas of colour. I tend to do things this way as I find it helps me feel like I’m making progress and it also helps me picture how the finished model will look. Or at least how I think it will look, talent permitting. With Nero being completely black I wanted to bring a bit of colour to Septimus, after all he is there to entertain so the crowd have to be able to see him. I started off thinking of using red as an accent colour but in the end I settled on turquoise as I thought it was just a little bit different. For the armoured elements I decided to go with a bronze effect and then the rest will just be different shades of leather. There is still a long way to go on this but it’s starting to take shape in my head at least.
To give an idea on how the metal will look when finished I managed to get most of the shield completed this week. I will do the final highlights once it’s fastened to Septiums’s back but I’m quite happy with how it’s turned out so far.
Finally for this week I happened to be in the vicinity of the GW store in Manchester with a few minutes to spare before my train so I popped in for a quick look around and ended up coming out with a new Codex. I just couldn’t resist all that shiny gold. So I now have a copy of Cdex Adeptus Custodes. Although to be fair I’m not actually planning on painting anything for them, at the moment. I was more interested in getting a look at what they had done for the background and how they are looking to integrate them into the wider Imperium and so far I’ve not been disappointed. I think as an army they would be something of glass hammer but on the plus side you wouldn’t need a lot of models. Although it would be a challenge to paint them up well. I’ll see how things go and may pick up a box to do a couple of test models, so watch this space.
That’s it now for this week. With only four more weeks to go before we set off for Adepticon I need to really get cracking with my painting so I need to be more disciplined over the next few weeks. I’ll set my sights on getting Septimus close to finished this week and maybe get more of the leather work completed on Jynz. So until next week have a good one and I’ll catch you all later.
