I didn’t have any images to work with for Captain Williams as he’s not in the concept art book and I haven’t seen any painted images of him on the net. However Corporal Franklyn is in the concept art book and he has a similar type of weapon so I thought I would go with same colour scheme. My thinking being that it becomes something of a standard for anyone who is using a light support type weapon.
The first step was to prime the model and I did this using Vallejo Black Surface Primer (74.602) for a first coat. I then went back over the model using Vallejo Grey Surface Primer (74.601) at about a forty five degree angle to start to build up some shadow and highlight.
Clothing: Trousers were done with Vallejo Basic Grey (71.097) and then this was highlighted with Vallejo Medium Sea Grey (71.049). This was then given a wash with Citadel Null Oil to darken things down before going back over the raised areas for a final highlight with Vallejo Medium Sea Grey (71.049). The cloak was started off with a coat of Vallejo UK Mediterran Blue (71.111). All the raised areas where then highlighted with Vallejo UK Azure (71.108) before everything was given a wash of Citadel Asurmen Blue Wash. To finish things off I went back and did some final highlights with Vallejo UK Azure (71.108)
Leather Work: The leather for things such as holster, belt harness straps and boots is done with Vallejo Beasty Brown (72. 043) followed by an edge highlight of Vallejo Desert Yellow (72.763). This is then given a wash of Vallejo Dark Brown Wash (76.514).
Weapons and Armour: The metal parts including the harness and back place are done with Vallejo Gun Grey (71.072) and highlighted with Vallejo Aluminum (71.062). Everything is then subdued with a wash of Citadel Null Oil Wash. The final step is to pick out the areas that would catch the light with Vallejo Aluminum (71.062). Section within the gun and harness also receive a little Badger Ghost Tint Fresh Blood (D6-111) to give a bit of that RJ touch.
Skin: For the skin I started with a base of Reaper MSP Bones Barbarian Flesh (09442) and then highlighted this by mixing in some Vallejo Basic Skin Tone (70.815) building up to just using the Basic Skin Tone. Then to finish things off on the final highlights I mixed in some Vallejo Pale Flesh (72.003).
Miscellaneous Details: The hats were started off with a coat of Vallejo UK Mediterran Blue (71.111). All the raised areas where then highlighted with Vallejo UK Azure (71.108) before everything was given a wash of Citadel Asurmen Blue Wash. The armbands were done with a coat of Vallejo Pure Red Surface Primer (70.624) followed by a highlight of Citadel Evil Sunz Scarlet. The goggles were done with a base of Vallejo Aluminum (71.062) before going back with Badger Ghost Tint Plasma Fluid (D6-180) for the lenses.
Bases: I decided to split the basing down into two separate sections. First of all I took the standard WWX base that came with the model and primed it with Vallejo Black Surface Primer (74.602). Once this was dry I went over everything again using Vallejo Grey Surface Primer (74.601). I then used a thinned down Vallejo Wood Grain (70.828) to give a sort of polished wood effect.
For the second part I cut out some plasticard inserts that would fit in the WWX bases and then used green stuff to give them a broken earth texture. Before the green stuff set I pressed in some Secret Weapon Scenics Tree Stumps. This part was then primed using Vallejo Black Surface Primer (74.602). I then dry brushed over this with Citadel Dark Fang Brown followed by Citadel Skrag Brown and then a final coat of Citadel Tallarn Sand. The next step was to use Vallejo Desert Yellow (72.763) to highlight the edges of all of the broken areas to give them a bit of pop. Everything was then given a wash of Vallejo Dark Brown Wash (76.514) and a final highlight with the Vallejo Desert Yellow (72.763). The trees were given a wash of Vallejo Rust Wash (76.506) and when that was dry two coats of Vallejo Dark Brown Wash (76.514) before the highlights were picked out with Vallejo Desert Yellow (72.763).
Captain Williams was then mounted to the bases and Secret Weapon Ancient Earth and Yellow Earth weathering powder was used to blend his lower body and legs with the base. With all that complete the last step was to add the grass. For this I used 6mm Mixed Green (Wild) Gamers Grass.
