Confederate – Stonewall Jackson (Boss) – Painting Guide

Stonewall Jackson is one of the Bosses of the Confederate Rebellion and like most of the colour schemes of late the inspiration for this one came from the Concept Art book. I there he is shown in a grey uniform, which to my limited historical knowledge is in keeping with the Confederate forces.

The first step was to prime the model and I did this using Vallejo Black Surface Primer (74.602) for a first coat. I then went back over the model using Vallejo Grey Surface Primer (74.601) at about a forty five degree angle to start to build up some shadow and highlight.

Clothing: Once the primer was fully dry I started to cover the clothing areas with Vallejo Basic Grey (71.097) and then highlighted this with Vallejo Medium Sea Grey (71.049). This was then given a wash with Citadel Null Oil to darken things down before going back over the raised areas for a final highlight with Vallejo Medium Sea Grey (71.049).

Leather Work: The leather for things such as holsters, belts and boots is done with Vallejo Beasty Brown (72. 043) followed by an edge highlight of Vallejo Desert Yellow (72.763). This is then given a wash of Vallejo Dark Brown Wash (76.514).

Skin: For the skin I started with a base of Reaper MSP Bones Barbarian Flesh (09442) and then highlighted this by mixing in some Vallejo Basic Skin Tone (70.815) building up to just using the Basic Skin Tone. Then to finish things off on the final highlights I mixed in some Vallejo Pale Flesh (72.003).

Weapons and Left Arm: The metal parts are done with Vallejo Gun Grey (71.072) and highlighted with Vallejo Chrome (71.064). Everything is then subdued with a wash of Citadel Null Oil Wash. The final step is to pick out the areas that would catch the light with Vallejo Chrome (71.064). The wood areas on sword and pistol are done with a coat of watered down Vallejo Wood Grain (70.828).

Miscellaneous Details: On the concept art the edges of his armour and some trim on his uniform are shown in gold but I thought that was a bit go gaudy for me so I went with Vallejo Bright Brass (71.067) instead. Then for the areas that would naturally catch the light I give a light highlight of Vallejo Polished Gold (72.055).

Bases: The model comes with its foot stood on a rock so rather than mounting this onto one of the custom tree bases I had already made I started from scratch and mounted the model onto its own green stuff base which I primed at the same time as the rest of the model. I then dry brushed over this with Citadel Dark Fang Brown followed by Citadel Skrag Brown and then a final coat of Citadel Tallarn Sand. The next step was to use Vallejo Desert Yellow (72.763) to highlight the edges of all of the broken areas to give them a bit of pop. Everything was then given a wash of Vallejo Dark Brown Wash (76.514) and a final highlight with the Vallejo Desert Yellow (72.763). To blend everything together I sued Secret Weapon Ancient Earth and Yellow Earth weathering powder on the lower part of Jackson and over the base. With all that complete the last step was to add the grass. For this I use 6mm Mixed Green (Wild) Gamers Grass to keep the same feel as that used on my other Confederates.
