Day Two

Day Two: Friday 25th March 2022

Well I’ve made it to day three and after a few beers last night at the Tavern near the hotel it was an earl; start this morning for my first class which was a Brush Skills Non Metallic Metal class by Mamikon Khatchikian. For me this one of holly grail type skills that I’ve tried and failed to come to terms with for year now. So my thinking was if can sit there and get some direct feedback, be it god or bad, I can try and come to term with what I’m doing wrong. The aim of the class was t o paint a sword so things were nice and simple but it was a good way to try and pick p the basics and I feel that I now have a much better understanding of the process than I did before. It’s not that l actually learned anything I didn’t already know but I got the chance to see it in practice and things just seemed to click with me. Having said that I don’t think my first attempt was particular good but it’s a nice stepping off point. It just needs more practice.

Next up was Colour Theory Completely and Totally Demystified by Benjamin Kantor. I had mixed feelings going into this one about what I could get out of it as an enthusiastic parent who is no ever going to paint anything high end. So I guess for me it was about learning something that would help me when I’m trying to pick a colour scheme. I’ve taken a lot of note from this class and I’m not going to try and cover them all here, partly because I’m typing this whilst sat at the end of the bar with a nice cool IPA, and I’d be a drunken mess before I finished. And partly because I haven’t digested it all myself yet but I did enjoy it and I think there are lots of things that I can take from it and add into future projects.

Last up for today was Games Workshop Presents: Wet Blending with Caleb Widogast. Now I did a class with Caleb last time I was here and really enjoyed it and I have to say this one was no different. Although it as badged as wet blending it actually included a few different type of blending that you could use for different areas on a mini. One of things I wanted out of this week was to look at how different instructors approach the same tech nice and there were some differences between this course and the one I did yesterday but neither contradicted the other. It’s just different approaches to the same thing which at the end of the day is all about adding tools to your tool box that you can then use as and when you need them.

It’s been a full on day which including a few chats with the instructors after the session has ben about eight hours. So in typical fashion I’m enjoying a few beers whilst I start to try and process everything. Pete has a game until ten so once I’ve got this update typed up I’m going to get something to eat, or if I’m being honest with myself I’ll have another beer then go and get something to eat before going and finding Pete to see how he’s getting on.

So that’s it for today. I’m going to leave is updating on the super fast wi-if and I’ll be back tomorrow with more Adepticon magic.
