No D&D adventure update for you this week but we do have a session planned for tonight so I’ll something for you on that front next week. But having painted up the dwarves last week I’ve got the bug for painting more characters at the expense of the kill team not making much progress. So I’m going to start the paltry work I have done on the kill team which amounts to little more than getting some colour onto the carapace section of the bodies. Whilst I have to admit it’s not much in the way of progress I’m clinging to the fact that it is at least some progress. But more importantly they are still on work bench and haven’t been filed in on a shelf or heaven forbid places in a box, just for a few days. As long as they are there I will keep plodding away.
Now the fact that I haven’t got much done on the kill team doesn’t mean that I’ve haven’t got any hobby time in this week. That is because I have been working my through some of the model I originally picked up to form a Frost Grave crew but are now being inspired as D&D characters. I’ve also been doing some work on a few more cork bases and trying to bring together a bit of tutorial and I have to say progress on that front has been a lot more positive.
So let’s start off with another dwarf, can you see a pattern forming here. This time it’s and offering from Scribor Monstrous miniatures which I ordered at the same time as the guys I showed you last week. This one turned up at the start of the week and I decided to paint it in a similar colour scheme to the guy with the axe and shield. I just imagined what he might look like with a hunting cloak in some green or brown instead of in what I’m thinking of as his normal cloths. Comparing this model to the others scale wise it is much more in keeping with the heroic side of things and I have to say I think I prefer the style that Black chapel have gone with. Don’t get me wrong this is a really nice model and I’ve already got some more lined up I just like the ascetics of the others a little more.
This guy has a really nice pose and for me sums up the look of a dwarven adventurer out hunting for his supper, or taking aim on some unsuspecting evil doer. Either way it’s a nice piece and I was really looking forward to getting it painted and added to the collection. I think that by putting it on the same sort of base it fits in well with the other guys but what do you think.
Now that I’ve touched on the bases it was this work that prompted me to start work on this next model. I’m not really sure what it’s supposed to be other than some big feline hunter that I wouldn’t want to stumble across. When I decided to paint this one I quickly realised that the 32mm base would be so small so I stepped it out a 40mm one instead. The original plan was for it to have a bit of ridge and that that beast would be walking along the ridge. Once the base was ruffed out I found out that the model ended up with feet hanging off and just didn’t look right. So I was going to start again but just decided to play around with a few other poses before I did and found that I could make it look the it was walking up over this bit of ridge. The difference in pose is minimal but I think it makes the whole thing look a lot more dynamic. For me it really gives the impression that it is moving across the base. I’m not sure if it’s just out for a stroll or stalking its prey but either way I like how a mistake ended up really changing the feel of the model.
Felling like I was on a roll I also worked on a ranger and what I’m thinking of as a female rogue. I didn’t have quite the same enthusiasm for these but still enjoyed working on them. There wasn’t much of a plan when I started these so I just used the same palate as I did for the dwarves with the idea being that they are all on part of the same party. Then putting them on the same bases I think it does give that feel, whilst at the same time giving them their own individual feel.
That’s it for this week and whilst I didn’t really get anything done on the kill team I think it’s been a productive week. But more importantly I’ve really enjoyed painting these guys. The only problem now is going to be that I have run out of Dwarf’s to paint so I really don’ t know what’s going to motivate me in the coming week. Hopefully it will involve some kill team but I’m not making any promises. So until next week hope you all have a good and I’ll be back with another update next Saturday.
