Weekly Waffle #414 – The Pint-Sized Powerhouse of Pitch and Pub

4th March 2026

Well where do I start with this week’s weekly waffle. I was hoping to be regaling you with my adventures from flung places. But instead my update from what should have been the holiday of a lifetime is that the Tangerine Tantrum monger decided that he wanted to start a war and my holiday ended up being cancelled. So I have been feeling sorry for myself for a couple of weeks and even though I haven’t been away I haven’t done any updates. But I have been doing quite a lot of work to update the site. None of this is visible yet as I’ve been using a staging area to test things out. After breaking the site and having to restore it form a backup when I did the first change.

So there will be some changes coming soon and I’m hoping you will like them once they land. Whilst I’m not a refreshed as I was hoping to be I do some renewed mojo. It’s a case of even though things have gone wrong it could have been so much worse if we had been caught up in the thick of it. But I’m back and the mojo is running high so to steal a line from John and Scot, I’m ready to slay some grey.

So to get things rolling I’m carrying on with the Blood Bowl theme and in a bit of dejavu moment I am bringing to the pitch the one and only Joseph Bugman. And yes I know he was the last post but this time I’m bringing him in his guises as a Star Player and not as a coach.

Both minis come in the same blister but they do have different roles in the game so I’ve cheated a little and got two posts for the price of one. In my defence I have just come back off my extended holiday so I wanted to have something I knew I could get completed and ready for this waffle. So from a painting perspective I have followed exactly the same process as I did for the coach version. He just has a different pose. This time instead of his book of tactics he is triumphantly holding the ball aloft whilst enjoying a celebratory pint.

What class.

Josef Bugman is a name synonymous with the finest ale in the Old World, but don’t let the scent of malt and hops fool you. Behind the master brewer is a stout-hearted warrior with a grip like a vice and a temper that flares hotter than a forge. While he has long supported the Gritty Grumps from the sidelines, the time has come for Bugman to lace up his boots, strap on his gromril reinforced pads, and show the league that he’s just as dangerous with a block as he is with a brew.

When Bugman steps onto the pitch, he isn’t just playing for the fans; he’s playing for the honour of dwarfkind. His presence on the roster transforms the Gritty Grumps from a sturdy defensive line into an immovable wall of beer fueled aggression.

He is a Master of the “Liquid” Offense. Bugman doesn’t play like your average Blocker. He brings a unique blend of veteran experience and “liquid courage” to the Gritty Grumps. His role as a Star Player focuses on three core pillars:

Being the Ultimate Anchor: With a low centre of gravity and decades of experience fending off tavern brawlers, Bugman is nearly impossible to shift. He anchors the scrum, providing a steady point of origin for the Grumps’ offensive pushes.

He has the Best Buff: It’s rumoured that Josef carries a “medicinal” flagon of his XXXXXX ale right onto the pitch. A quick swig can turn a tiring Longbeard into a rejuvenated engine of destruction, keeping the Gritty Grumps’ attrition rate lower than any other team in the league.

And he can always roll out his Tavern-Brawl Tactics: Bugman treats the Line of Scrimmage like a Friday night at the brewery. He excels at dirtying up the play, using unexpected angles and veteran “tricks” to put even the largest Ogres on their backs.

The Strategic Impact of a Star Player

Adding a Star Player of Bugman’s caliber changes the maths for the Gritty Grumps. He provides more than just raw Strength; he provides a focal point for the entire team’s strategy.

Morale in Motion: Seeing a living legend leading the charge inspires the rest of the squad. When Bugman cracks an opponent’s helmet, the Gritty Grumps find that extra gear needed to punch through the defence.

Target Prioritisation: Opponents are forced to deal with Bugman. If they ignore him, he clears the path to the End Zone. If they commit three players to take him down, they leave the rest of the Grumpy Grumps free to exploit the gaps.

Resilience and Recovery: Bugman knows how to take a hit. His legendary toughness means he stays on the pitch longer, ensuring the Gritty Grumps never lose their tactical heartbeat during the gruelling second half.

A Toast to Victory

The Gritty Grumps have always been a team of grit and determination, but with Josef Bugman leading the line as their Star Player, they have become something more: a legend in the making. He brings the spirit of the mountain and the fire of the brewery to every snap of the ball.

As the whistle blows and the crowd roars, one thing is certain, win or lose, the Gritty Grumps will fight harder and drink better than anyone else in Blood Bowl. Keep your eyes on the pitch and your mugs full, because with Bugman in the game, the Gritty Grumps are brewing up a season that no one will forget!

So that is both versions of Joseph Bugman covered and his affiliation with the Gritty Grumps. But who are the Gritty Grumps I can hear you asking. Well that is the name I’ve chosen for my dwarf team and they will be taking shape over the next few weeks. Along with a back story and lots of pictures.

Now that I know what I’m going to be working on over the next few week’s I am going to call out that I may not be able to get things finished the standard I would like each week. Mainly because we are into a really busy period at work so my hobby time is going to be restricted. And I know that if the mojo isn’t going well then my painting slows down. So I just want to set the scene that I may start sharing work in progress pictures as opposed to the finished article some weeks. Just until things start to calm down a bit.

I’m also going to recycle some of the work I’ve done into the weekly waffles and condense it down into a new set of articles that will appear in a new section of the site I’m going to call the “Chronicles”. It’s basically where I’m going to share lore and tactics for different games and factions.

Things will start off in a Waffle as normal but I’ll then compile things into their own little area so it’s easier to find and hopefully use as a reference. Along with links to other recourses such as You Tube video’s or gaming communities.

That’s about it for this week. A bit shorter than normal but I’m still finding my feet after that break but I have more Blood Bowl on the work bench and you will seeing that over the next few week’s. Thanks for taking the time to have read today and I hope to catch you all again, same place, same time next week.
