Weekly Waffle #351 – Fly away

Weekly Waffle #351 – Fly away

19th October 2024

I mentioned last week that I had a lot of travelling about for work this week so my hobby time was going to be limited. Living in the UK means that normally we can drive or get on a train, assuming they are running, and get just about anywhere in a few hours. Unlike our cousins across the pond who have to fly for a short trip, such is the scale of the country. But what has this got to do with me I can hear you say. Well this week I have had to fly for work. Not the first time but it’s a rare experience and I don’t like it. Normally when I fly I am going on holiday so having to fly for work is something of a disappointment. You still have all of airport carnage but at the end of it you have to work and then do it all again at the end of the day. No sitting in a bar and letting your woes wash away. No it’s straight back in the car, drive to the next hotel ready to do it all again the next day.

The other thing that I hadn’t really realised until this week is just how boring airports really are. When you are going on holiday you can have a pint and chill out. When you are travelling for work you can’t have a pint and you know at the other end it’s all work and no play. Then you have to do it all again in the evening followed b a long drive to another boring hotel. Now that is a real moan on my part but I don’t have to do a week like that for a while now. So I am really hoping that I can get in a little bit of extra hobby time now.

So all of this carfuffle has just got in the way of my hobby time. But what time I have had I think I have put to good use. There isn’t much to show you in the way of content but I have got a lot of prep work completed. I have cleaned up three squads of Orks so that they are ready for paint as soon as sort out some bases for them. They have even been magnetised so that I can mix and match their weapons and banner poles. There is a lot of work there which all takes time but I think it will be well worth it once I start to get paint on them.

One thing I have learned this week though is that technique for adding magnets is rubbish. I have it down pat for making sure the polarity is right but I have got into this habit of keeping the magnets in a stick. It makes them easier to handle. I then put the glue in the slot for the magnet. Put the magnet in, still as part of its stick and then use my thumb to slide the other magnets out of the way. Leaving the one magnet, in the right place on the mini. It works so I keep doing it. But what I have noticed is the any excess glue also ends up on my thumb. Specifically on my thumb nail. Not a problem because it’s only a little bit of glue. But when you have done three squads h of magnets, with an average of four per mini that is a lot of magnets. Which in turn is a lot of excess glue. When that glue is superglue gel it leaves my thumb nail looking like it has some infection. The price we pay for our hobby.

As well as all of this prep work for future projects I have found the time to get a little bit of painting completed. Not a lot but every little helps. I have been sticking with grot riggers, or at least grots with that feel. The idea is to get a full squad of these little guys just because I think they look cool. This week we have a cable guy and a bionic guy. Both of these are nice but I’m not one hundred percent sure of where they came from. I’m reasonably sure though that on came from Wargame Exclusive and the other from Kromlech. But I can’t remember which is which and I have been to the respective sites to check. But they are both nice and think they sit well alongside each other.

But as usual what do you think.

I’m hoping to get a little bit more hobby time next week so if I can pull my finger out and get some bases finished I may beat able to bring you something more than just grots. Although I do have quite a few grots to be working on. On the squad front I have a some big shooters how came as one package but I think I am going to break them up to go into truck boy squads. I then have a full unit that can be made up to be either lootas or flash gitz. I’m currently swaying towards lootas but magnets may be my friend here giving me future options. Next up are a squad of ard boys who I am going to paint up as a bodyguard for the Emperork. Lastly I have a unit that will work well as mega nobs and they can really make use of magnetised weapon options.

So as you can see I have a lot to go at. It’s just getting the time in to actually be able to finish a squad in time for Saturday morning. Which in reality means it has to be finished on Friday if I want to get pictures taken and a write up done. So I’m setting myself a tight schedule. But it stops me procrastinating once I pick what I’m going to be working on. Which at the time of writing I haven’t done.

That’s it for this week, I hope you have enjoyed my little waffle and that you come back next Saturday to see what I have managed to get done. In the mean time I hope you have a have a great weekend. It’s my nieces third birthday so I will mainly be acting as a climbing frame and eating cake. But whatever you are doing have fun and stay safe.
