Weekly Waffle #337 – A touch of class

Weekly Waffle #337 – A touch of class

15th June 2024

For this week’s weekly waffle I have once again stayed in the under hive of Necromunda but this time I’ve brought a bit of begrudging class to the party. Whilst most of the spire dwellers know nothing about the real workings of the hive, there are some who do. The great houses may not like having to deal with the scum of the under hive, with them being so far below them, both socially and literally. But they do realise that they can be a useful, cheap and also disposable tool. One of those great houses is House Greim.

To give you a bit more of a feel for this weeks project I’m going to pluck some words directly from the Warhammer store were we have the description of the House Greim Military Attaché:

Sent down from the spires to aid affiliated gangs, Krieg Mesters offer tactical advice and oversee the field testing of House Greim-funded weaponry. Most gang leaders tolerate the presence of a Krieg Mester because of the wealth their Noble House offers, or because their own Clan House has coerced them into cooperation. Occasionally though, these noble officers really know what they are talking about, and some gangs have, on the advice of a Krieg Mester, managed to turn the tide against their enemies, or scrape victory in battles that seemed all but lost. Krieg Mesters are always accompanied by Jagerkin bodyguards – bonded servants drawn from veterans of the militia or the Imperial Guard.

Necromunda gangs with an Allegiance to Noble House Greim may hire a Military Attaché. The Krieg Mester offers strategic guidance (not to mention their finely crafted bolt pistol and power sword), while their mesh-armoured Jagerkin totes a versatile combat shotgun. Their service doesn’t come for free, of course, and your gang may be expected to contribute fighters to the House Greim militia from time to time.

The miniatures themselves are very nice and really look the part. No cheap cobbled together equipment here. When it came to painting them I decided just to go with the colours from the Warhammer web site. Mainly so that I didn’t spend an age trying to come up with something new. But also because I think it looks good and is different to anything else I have painted for Necromunda so far. That means they will stand out on the table top as not belonging to any one particular gang. Which to me sits very well with them being advisors to the gangs that align in serving the goals of House Greim. Although that support could be turned against them if it suits the ultimate goal of House Greim.

The white really makes these stand out on the table top and sets them apart from the gang members. Even when they are weathered up in the same way as the gangers I think the white still shines through . There is a nice contrast between the predominantly white of the uniforms against the accent colours from armour, sachets and the like that just give them a nice pop. They really fit the part of not belonging in the under hive. They are just too classy to be there for any other reason than business.

The painting process went quite well for this project. I had already cleaned them up and primed them as part of a min batch, which always takes me a lot longer than I expect. Even though every time I do it I try to remind myself to double whatever time I’ve set aside in my head. So when it actually came to putting the colour on I did nearly all of it in one session per mini. Which is good going for me. There were just little things like the eyes and gems that took an extra bit of time to get right.

Basing and a bit of weathering saw them all finished and I think they look good. Especially when you look at them alongside some of the gang members I already have. I think these will be a good addition to my Necromunda collection and could be a really nice addition to a narrative games or campaigns. But what do you guys think.

You can find more Necromunda mins from a few faction on my Necromunda Gallery here.

Whilst I’m happy to put these minis on the table the critical side of me isn’t really happy with some parts. Or more accurately I’m not happy with the white. I think it looks good on the table top when you have a bit of distance between you and the mini. But if you pick either of them up and have a closer look you can clearly see that it’s not a smooth finish, with lots of visible brush marks and a few patchy spots. I think like a lot of people I struggle with painting white so it’s something I need to do more of if I want to get better. I’m not trying to put a downer on them as do really like how they look on the table top. But what I’m going to take away from this experience is to go a little slower and not try to get a finished product in one go. Do thinner layers but do more of them to try and build up a nice smooth finish. As they say practice makes perfect. But I’m not going to use white in my next project.

Speaking of future projects Puppets War have been teasing a new vehicle that is currently available to their Patrion members. I don’t have a 3D printer and unfortunately don’t have anywhere to set one up so I will have to wait until it appears in the shop. But I will be making that order as soon as they land. And I think I even have a colour scheme lined up for it. The only problem for me is I think it will be at least a month before it goes on general release. Which really infuriates me because now I have seen it I’m really impatient to add it to my collection. It might never see use in a game but have started to look at One Page Rules so who knows the old Ork Boys may be seeing some table time in the not to distant future. And if they do they will have some new shiny vehicles to rumble across the battlefield in. Rushing ever onward to victory, or in my case usually glorious defeat.

On the project front I have more Necromunda lined up for you so no big change there. Lots more hired guns and even a new gang are all just fighting for that next slot on the project roster. Although to be fair I have quite a lot on at work at the moment so the gangs may have to take a back seat for a little while. I have also been looking at some alternative minis for another enforcer gang and I think I’ve found a good selection. But I don’t have a colour scheme for them yet so I’m not going to pull the trigger on getting them until I have one sorted.

That’s it for this week. I hope you are enjoying the Necromunda theme that seems to running my mojo at the moment because I have more on the way. I will be back with something for you next week so until then I hope you all have a good week. Keep safe and have fun whatever you are doing.
