Weekly Waffle #293

9th April 2022

Well once again I have missed a couple of updates but I’m putting them both down to Adepticon. The first was the Saturday of Adepticon and I had been doing daily updates so I don’t feel to bad about that one. Last weeks was missing because I came back with the conference lurgy and just didn’t have the energy to do an update. I’m still not that well this week but I’m not missing another update so I’m going to fight my way through and give you an update this week. I haven’t really done much in the way of hobby since I’v e been back, because every time I put my head down to paint my noise leaks which isn’t very conducive of a good painting session. I have done a bit of work of some of the Marvel Crisis Protocol minis that came in the goodie bag. All I really wanted to do with these was go do some painting so that I don’t fall back into a rut of not doing anything. I do have another box of these guys that I will try and do to a higher standard at a later date so it might be good to co a comparison and contrast later. Still a way to go with them but I’t the only hobby I’ve done so far since I’ve been back.

Now then lets get onto the meat for this weekends waffle and that is my review of this years Adepticon. I’m going to stat by saying I really enjoyed the chance to travel for the first time in a long time and that the event was really well run. I felt safe and entertained throughout. But I have to say that it did feel what I can only describe as ‘flat’ this year. I can’t really put my finger on one thing but the buzz that has been present in previous years just didn’t seem to be there this year. It was more the little things so for anyone who has been before there is a bits vendor in one of the big hall ways and usually you will see people sitting on the floor looking through all the boxes for that elusive mini of piece they just have to have. You didn’t have that this year, it was all a little more subdued and the excitement levels just weren’t there. There were other things such as the bar not being open during the day and no food available at the bar. So there weren’t as many people mingling and getting to know each other.

I’m not sure if this was because everyone was being extra cautious but it certainly lacked some of the buzz from previous years. In the gaming hall I think i only heard a couple of WHHAAAGS over the whole four days an there didn’t seem to be as many display boards as in previous years. Having said that were still lots of very nice armies on display and I’m a little annoyed with myself that I didn’t manage to get more pictures. Although I did manage to get quite a few of the Golden Deamon entries.

That was something else that was different this year and I don’t know if it contributed to the feel but there was no Crystal Brush with Games Workshop instead running the Golden Deamon. I really liked the variation you got with Crystal Brush because entrants could enter anything they wanted so you had a wider range of interest. I know a lot of people who would have entered Crystal Brush entered the Golden Deamon but there were a few people around who hadn’t because they aren’t fans of the GW models. I am a fan of the GW models and really enjoyed looking at the work people had submitted with even the ‘bad’ ones being of a high standard. But there was something very especially with Crystal Bruch where you could see a GW model along side something from Infinity or Malifaux and then an out and out fantastic bust or one off piece next to them. It will be interesting to see how things develop over the coming years. But for now here are some Golden Deamon entries for you to have a look at.

The seminars / classes I attended, with the except of one, I really enjoyed and took a lot away from them. I think part of the enjoyment came from setting some realistic expectations and not expecting to be an expert at the end of the session. Instead managing things to the point that you now have an understanding of a process that you can take away and practice. And it will take a loft of practice. Something I haven’t even started yet but I will over the next few weeks when with a bit of look this cold will break and I can start to feel human again. The one class I didn’t like was more down to me and my way of learning as opposed to the instructor not knowing what he was talking about. Because he won a Golden Deamon, not sure which flavour, so he obviously has a lot of talent.

I’m going to wrap things up there for this week. Hopefully you liked the pictures and I’ll try and get back into weighting on a regular basis so that I have a semi competent update for your next week. Until then have a good week and I hope to catch you all back here again next week.
