Weekly Waffle #352 – Mega Busta
26th October 2024
Not quite as much travel this week although I did have the joy of it taking Northern Rail, also referred to as Northern Fail, five hours to travel sixty miles on Tuesday. It was just a see of cancelled trains and then the ones that were running were stopping every couple of minutes. The upside was that I managed to finish my latest book and do quite a bit of this update. I’ve still not got used to how long it takes me to write these updates each week. I know they aren’t war and peace but it sometimes feels like it. Especially when I have a time deadline looming. But here we are and I hope I’m finding you all a good hobby space this week.
So the extra time I have had this week has, I think been well spent. No grots for you this week, which I know will disappoint some of you, but I’m trying to share the love for other miniatures. But I have stayed on the Ork theme and have been working my way through my box of Puppets War projects. I had started to get the pile down but I have topped it back up with more on the way. It at least ensures I have something for content. Even if I’m not clearing the pile down quite as quickly as I would like.
Even though I have had more time I’ve still not had a lot of time so I tried to work on something that would give me a fighting chance of getting it finished for the Saturday update. Which I have managed to do but I don’t think my pick actually did me any favours in the long run. It is only three models but there are quite a few ‘options’ for them and I have painted them all up and used magnets so that I can swap them out. The net result was that it’s taken me all of the time I had to get them painted. Which didn’t leave me a lot of time to get them photographed and uploaded. The result of that is that I have got with a single option of each mini and will share the other options when I take some more pictures for the main gallery. So you will get to see everything, just not today. Which I suppose from marketing point of view is good because hopefully it gives you a reason to come back on the future.
So after all that intro waffle what have I been working on this week. Well it’s been some Nobs in Mega Armour, or as Puppets War refers to them. Orc’s in Buster Armour. The ascetic is take straight from Marvel with the Hulk Buster suite and I think they work really well. They have the Ork feel whilst at the some time paying homage to their movie inspiration, and I think trading the fine line of avoiding any copy right issues. Or it may just be that table top gaming isn’t big enough for a major studio to worry about.
On the painting front I’m keeping with my standard speed freak colour scheme of red with some blue and yellow highlights. This time though I made something of rod for my own back when I had the idea to do some yellow and blue checkers. My original idea was to do that for the heads, or helmets but when I decide to swap out the heads, more on that later, I then decided to go with the checkers on the breast plate. There is nothing complicated about it but it did take quite a bit of time. There are three different shades of blue to try and give it some depth and then two shades of yellow. So whilst it’s not a large area to paint it is fiddly and it’s surprising how much time it eats up. But I do think it has been worth it. It’s nothing special but it is something I haven’t done before and helps to make them stand out a little bit.
As you will see in the pictures later I have gone with the gun option for them. But I have also painted up some rocket launchers and some spot lights. All of these can be swapped out because they are all magnetised. I think once I get the time I will do a picture of one of them with all of the different hand and weapon options laid out in front of it. A bit like I’ve seen a picture of an F16 with all of the different payload options it can carry. It’s just a cool picture.
I mentioned above that I didn’t go with the heads supplied with the kit. There are two different options, which are both nice but they just didn’t give the feel I was looking for. So I look at what other options I had in my bits box and decided to go with the ones you can see below. They are actually from the Orc Ultimate Bad Ass Squad, which with a bit of look will be my next updated. But I’m not going to use these heads, for reason I will explain when I do that update. With them going spare I think they look really good on the guys so I’ve gone with them. But what do you think.
You can see more Ork miniatures at my gallery here.
I think they look really cool and I would look to add a few more to them at some point in the future. I think there is plenty of scope to have one as Big Mech in Mega Armour and even though there aren’t any rules for it one could be made up as a mad dock which I think will look really cool. I a nice project to do something a little bit different.
There are a few bits that aren’t quite up to scratch at the moment but I would be more than happy to field them on the table top which is why I have shared them now. The key thing they need is some weathering but as I’ve mentioned before I’m not really sure which route I want to take with them so I’m going to leave them for now. Then when I’ve got a few squads finished I can look at them all tougher and make a decision. And then probably have a bit of weathering session so I get some consistency across all of the minis.
I’m back to traveling again next week so I’m not sure what I will be able to get completed for the Saturday update. Fear not though the Weekly Waffle will be here and I’m hoping I won’t be grots again. Although hit may not be a full squad. As I’ve said I’ve go the ultimate bad ass squad which I’m hoping to share with you. Although I will be breaking them cup and using them in different squads but you will have to pop back next week to find out how.
So until next week I hope you all keep safe, enjoy whatever you have planned of the week and don’t force for those of you in the UK the clocks go back tonight. Either an extra hour in bed, and extra hour of hobby time, or possible an extra hour of jobs that just have to be done now.
