Weekly Waffle # 386 – The Full Cowabunga
19th July 2025
For this week’s Weekly Waffle I have finally got round to finishing my long term Ork project. Or should that just be it’s taken me a long term to complete my Ork project. After all it’s not like I’ve painted up a full six thousand point from scratch. In fact at the rate I’m currently painting I wouldn’t be finished before the heat death of the universe. But it is finished so I’m going to share it with you, and I also have a small update on the paintRack app that talked about last week.
In fact I’m going to drag this project out as long as I can and start with that small update on paintRack. One of the questions I raised was about updates to the App as new products were released. I have some AK Quick Gen speed paints and non of them were recognised my the App. But there has been an update this week and they have all been added. So they now scan and are sitting in my Library. So that is nice position to be in feeling that my fiver has been well spent and I’m not going to be left with something that is static and out of date.
I think I have stalled this as long as I can so I really need to get on with explaining what the latest project has been. For those of you haven’t figured it out yet it’s the Ninja Team Van from Puppets War. In game terms I see this filling the role of the Boomdakka Snazzwagon simply because of the weapons it has. I could be completely wrong with my thinking there but based on what I can see online I do think it fits nicely.
I actually ordered it as soon as it came out and it wasn’t until it landed on my desk that I realised I didn’t have a clue about what colour scheme to use. The TMNT were something that I thought I knew but when it came down to it I really couldn’t remember the van. So it was something of shock when I realised it needed to be Green and Yellow. The green was ok but everyone knows that painting yellow is a nightmare.
To make things as simple as possible for myself I decided to do a much as possible with the air brush and made the decision to go with the green first. The thinking behind this was that I didn’t want the yellow to be too vibrant and thought painting the yellow over the green would help to take the edge off things.
I’m really happy with how it came out and even some of the little areas of overspray seem to work well given the Ork nature of things. To age the yellow a little bit more I also used the airbrush to add a thin layer of Nazdreg Yellow which just takes the edge of the colour and to me gives it that aged look.
By then applying the contrast yellow to all of the chips and scratched followed by some edge highlighting with a nice vibrant yellow you get a bit of pop back in the colour. Yellow is one of those colours that I think a lot of us struggle with but I’m happy with how it turned out and I’m really happy I didn’t go with a different colour just to make life easier for myself. It just wouldn’t have been right to do it in any other colours.
I decided to drop in a few bits of extra colour in the form of my usual red and blue on the roof and bumper spikes. It adds that little bit of extra colour and also helps to tie this in with the rest of my Orks which all use this colour scheme.
This has been another really enjoyable project and I don’t think that Puppets War have put a foot wrong in the Orc space. But what do you think.
You can see more Ork miniatures at my gallery here.
Even though it’s been a drawn out process I’ve really enjoyed this project and it’s got me looking at the Puppets War sight again. They have a bat mobile that I haven’t bothered with because I didn’t like the idea of painting black. But I’m now thinking that I may have to give it a go. Really just to expand my collection and not have any gaps from the vehicles that are currently available as physical minis.
They also have the armoured personnel carrier from Aliens but it is only available as an STL file and I don’t have a printer so this is out of reach at the moment. They have also just released the STL file for a Top Gun style F14 that I do like so I will need to see if this becomes available as a resin print in the not too distant future.
So they have lots of things that I can add to my backlog to keep me busy and to keep expanding my orc collection. They even do a European style flat truck which would fit in nicely with the kit bashed trucks I already have. Lots of things to be thinking about.
Warhammer have also revealed some new release that will be on the way soon and there are some nice Leagues of Votan minis in there. This is another the slow builds I’ve been working on and keep dropping in and out of. But some of these new minis could have me moving back into the world of orange again. .
Not that I have any plans to start playing them any time soon but I do like the minis and I’ve enjoyed the ones I’ve painted so far. But what I do need to do is pick up some KR Cases so that I can start to free up some shelf space for anything new I work on. I’m rapidly running out of space and I’m not sure how the missis will feel if I start to steel any more space.
That’s it for this week but I have a few things lined up for the next few weeks. Some new and some revisits to previous projects which I hope you will like. Finally finishing off some things that haven’t been quite happy with. Proof that you don’t have to be perfect first time around. You can always revisit a project if you want to .
I hope you all have a great week and I will back here at the same time next week.
