Weekly Waffle # 385 – Last Boy
12th July 2025
For this week’s Weekly Waffle I have a combination of technical waffle and hobby update. There was no update last week because I had a week off work with the wife and spent the time relaxing. A mix of sunny and rainy days so we made the most of the sunny days with day trips. And the relaxed with a couple of box sets on the rainy days. All very nice and helped to recharge the batteries a little.
Then it was back in to manic week at work. I do have some hobby updates for you a little later but I wanted to start off with a little bit of a tech review. If you are anything like me keeping track of all the paints you have can be a real challenge. And the number of times I haven’t been able to find something, assumed I don’t have any left, replaced it only to find it as soon as the new turns up. So having a reliable way to keep track of my paints is something I’ve been looking for for a long time.
Citadel do their app which is really good, as long as you are only using their paints. If like me you have lots of different brands then keeping track of them all is a challenge. I’ve seen a few different painting project apps but they have either required a subscription or don’t offer what I’m looking for.
So what am I looking for in an app. For me it is something that can keep track of all of the paints I actually have. Something that allows me to have different projects where I can list the paints I use for different minis, units or armies. And something that can give me a list of paints I want to get next. That is the core of what I want which the Citadel app does if you only use their paints.
Whilst I was off I had a scroll on my phone and found myself looking for painting apps. And I came across one called ‘paintRack’. It offered everything I was looking for but had the dreaded ‘in app purchases’ showing in the App Store. The reviews looked good so I thought I would give it a go. But if it was going to require a subscription of some sort then it was going to be deleted.
Straight away I checked what was free and what was hidden behind a pay wall, and what was that pay wall. It turns out you get the basic library for free. So you can keep track of your paints at no cost. You get a couple of projects but the colour match tools, rapid scan, and wish lists are on the other side of that pay wall. I was a bit disappointed at this because I really liked the look of the app and it supported so many paint brands, lots of which I had never even heard of.
So the real question now was all about that dreaded pay wall. It turns out it was a one off payment of a fiver (£4.99 to be precise). So I took the plunge and paid up.
One of the things that unlocks is a rapid scan feature so I set about scanning all of my AK paints. This was really easy and it recognised most of the paints. It needs to be able to read the bar code on the bottle so if that is damaged or warn it can struggle. But you can add paints manually.
I now have all of my AK paints logged and a few GW and Vallejo ones but I still have more to go. But it isn’t all great news. The way the paints are grouped in the library isn’t always very logical. You can go by name but then you end up with German Blue next to Green. By colour still puts things in odd places or by the product number. I think this is the best as it groups the colours as the manufacturer has but it’s still not perfect.
The other issue I have is that if you use the colour swatch view the colours it displays aren’t always as accurate as I would like. Good for finding things but not good enough to use if you are trying to plan a colour scheme.
All in all I like the App even with its flaws. I think it’s worth the one off price and I fully intend to get all my paints logged and keep track of them with this. It may not be for everyone but I think it’s a solid option for keeping track of all your paints and just as importantly keeping track of what you have used on individual projects.
Now then I have also managed to do a little bit of hobby this week with another Orc finished off for my bigger project. Which fingers crossed will be ready for next week’s update.
But for this week it is just this one guy. I’ve used the same process for the black clothing. Along with the same process for the orc skin. So nothing special with this guy. The only real change was in the features such as the belt and eye mask. We have had red, orange and blue. Which only left purple for this last guy. And if you haven’t figured out why that is the case then I’m begging to despair. But you will get the answer next week.
I like how he has turned out but I’m also glad that he is the last one I need to finish. I’ve still got more work to do on the wider project but I can also see the end of that project too. But I’ll have more on that for you next week. For now what do you think of this last guy.
You can see more Ork miniatures at my gallery here.
That is all I have for you this week. My plan for next week is to get the current Ork project completed so that I can finally share it with you. And even though I do say this myself, I think it will be worth the wait. It’s a really fun build that will fit in well with rest of my Ork’s.
After that I’m not sue what I’m going to work on next. I have lots to pick from but I find myself in that space, like when you finish a really good book series. What do I do next. In fact I’m in that space with my books at the moment having just finished the Three Body Problem trilogy. What to read next.
Anyway I’m going to leave it there and if you want to see the completed project, and possibly hear what I pick to read next you will have to pop back next week. Same time and place. Until then I hope you all have a great week whatever you have planned.
