Weekly Waffle #373 – Rocket Man

Weekly Waffle #373 – Rocket Man

5th April 2025

So, for this week’s Weekly Waffle I’ve got some of my mojo back by switching up what I’ve been painting. I’ve switched gears again and gone back to painting up some Infinity miniatures. This was mainly because I follow Covus Belli on them their socials and they have announced some new Yu Jing models, and they look very nice. They are all specifically for the Imperial Service which means they can be fielded as a sectoral force or as part of a wider one. The releases will consist of a new Action Pack, a new police TAG and then a character who is referred to as the Dragon Lord. In keeping with all things Infinity, the miniatures look absolutely fantastic, so they are certainly going to make it onto my wish list in the very near future. I just can’t let these slip away from me.

I’ve got time to think about this before I will be anywhere near putting paint on these things but I’m currently thinking of just sticking with the same jade colour scheme that I use now. But what I was thinking of doing was doing the stripes on the arm in different colours. So, the black, red and white that I’ve used on the invisibles would denote units belonging to the Invincible Army. Then I could use a different set of colours, what I haven’t yet decided to denote units that belong to the Imperial Service. And then to keep things simple anything that doesn’t have markings like this would be part of the White Banner Army. It’s something that is quite subtle and wouldn’t be immediately obvious but once you know it would be easy to denote the different factions. I would certainly be a lot easier than trying to come up with a completely different colour scheme, that at the same time makes it feel like part of the same overall army.

Anyway, I’ve got some of the promotional pictures here so you can have a look and see what you think. Am I mad or are these very special looking miniatures.

For my hobby time I’ve gone back to my Yu Jing Invincibles and specifically the Zuyong with Missile Launcher. It’s been slow going with these guys, but I have enjoyed the switch from orange back to green and I think the standard is just the same as the ones I’ve already painted. Although I was really glad, I started to write up a painting guid. Which I will finish and share at some point in the future. Because it reminded me which paints to use and the steps I needed to follow to get the same results. Painting the strips on the arms was still a nightmare. They are just so fiddly and when you already have, what is essentially a finished miniature, patching up any mistakes can be a real pain.

Overall though I’m happy with how he has turned out. But I still have a lot to do to get what I already have painted up. Let alone think about adding to the backlog, which let’s face it I am going to do. I’m just trying to make it look, with the thinnest of veneers, like I am being responsible and working through my backlog.

But what do you guys think of him.

Whilst I’ve got the bug back for painting green, I’m going to have a go a painting up some Zhanshi with combi rifles next. Mainly because these are some of the lowest point minis I have at the moment, and they seem to tie in best with the starter games of Operation Sand trap. Not an exact fit but close enough I think to have a game. Not that we have started playing yet but if I can get them finished then I will be ready we do get round to having a game.

I’m not sure where to go after that but probably looking at adding some long rage fire power in the form of a Hundun with a multi sniper rife. From the games I’ve played in the past a sniper in Infinity can be lethal. If you can get them set up well, they can deny whole swathes of the board, or you have to risk being killed outright if you have to chance running into their area of control. So that sounds like a good option.

The other option that could just as impactful, but for different reasons would be the Ye Mao with an AP Spitfire. Basically, a dude with a sub machine gun. Not so good a long range but it throws a massive amount of firepower up close. So really good in that same sort of area denial role, but just as much closer ranges.

Both are really nice miniatures so who knows maybe I get both of them on the go at the same time. Although I’m not even sure how many points you would need to be playing to field both of them.

The other thing I have been pondering is whether or not to change the basing style. The more I have been looking at them the more I’m falling out of love with the snow effect bases. Or more accurately I’m not happy with my execution of the bases. I just think they look ‘off’. I can’t explain it any better than that but it’s starting to niggle at the back of mind whenever I look at them.

I’m thinking of just switching them out for more of a desert or arid sort of feel. But that would mean that I need to rebase the minis I’ve already finished. Which I know isn’t that big of a deal, I just need to get my finger out and make a decision before I paint too much that it becomes a massive job to re-base everything.

I think that considering I started this weekly waffle saying how I was trying to get some of my mojo back I’m ending it by feeling I’m on the right track. Mixing things up between my orange Votann and my green Yu Jing is giving me some nice contrast. I also have a couple of left field project pieces that I can call in if I need an escape from green and orange. So all in all I think I am still in a good hobby space. Not feeling burned out and no deadlines on the horizon to stress me out. At least no hobby projects, work may be a different thing. But my hobby time really helps keep me sane.

So that’s it for this week. I hope you have enjoyed the read and that you have a fantastic weekend and week ahead. Whatever you have planned, have fun, stay safe and I hope to see you back here, same time, same place next week.
