Weekly Waffle #398 – Up for fight
25th October 2025
This week’s weekly waffle sees the Blood Bowl project continue but this time I’m bringing you the Hefty’s. For anyone who has any interest in rugby I’m imagining my
Hefty’s essentially being flankers. Only interested in the fight and not really that bothered about anything else taking place on the pitch.
I touched on some of this last week but I used all sorts of different paints and techniques on these guys. One thing that I think has worked really well and is really basic was in the basing. I normally paint the bases up separately and then add the minis once I’ve finished them all. But this time I mounted the models before anything was even primed. I used some AK textured paint for the base just because it gives the feel of a sports pitch. And the minis feel like they are part of the pitch. Or more accurately they don’t feel like they have just been plonked on top.
By then adding some short Gamers Grass tufts which I think just work so well here. I really do like the bases and they work so well with the minis that all in all they look really good. But what do you think.
Hefty’s to be the halfling version of the flanker. Always up for a fight and really interested in anything else taking place on the field.
There’s a moment in every game of Blood Bowl when the stakes are high, the crowd is restless, and you realise that it’s not just about the star players or the flashy plays. You might think you’ve got it all figured out, the perfect strategy laid out before you. But then, just when you least expect it, a Halfling Hefty Lineman barrels into the fray, and suddenly, your carefully laid plans feel like they’re teetering on the edge of chaos. Welcome to the unpredictable world of the Hefty Linemen, the unsung heroes of the Halfling teams who bring a delightful blend of might and mischief to the pitch.
When you think of Halflings, you might conjure images of quaint villages, hearty feasts, and a carefree, jovial spirit. But don’t let their size fool you. The Hefty Linemen stand as a testament to the fact that even the smallest among us can pack a punch—literally and figuratively. These burly little warriors may not tower over their opponents, but they’ve got a heart full of determination and a belly that might just hold the secret to their strength. With a twinkle in their eye and a penchant for the absurd, they charge into the game with a unique blend of charm and chaos.
In the lore of Blood Bowl, the Hefty Linemen are often seen as the backbone of the Halfling teams. While their more agile counterparts—the Catchers and Throwers—often steal the spotlight, it’s the Hefty Linemen who do the heavy lifting. They may not be the fastest or the most agile, but their resilience and raw power are what enables the Halfling teams to compete against the big boys of the league. They embody the spirit of teamwork, often acting as the shields for their more nimble teammates, taking the hits so that the stars can shine.
Picture this: the game is in full swing, and your star Thrower is about to make a crucial pass. The opposing team is on the hunt, and you can see the grim determination in their eyes as they set their sights on your agile player. But wait! Out of nowhere, a Hefty Lineman appears, ready to take the hit. With a surprising burst of speed, he barrels into the opposition, creating just enough space for the Thrower to unleash that game-changing pass. It’s moments like these that showcase the Hefty Linemen’s true value—unassuming heroes who make the impossible possible.
But let’s not kid ourselves. The Hefty Linemen are not just glorified meat shields. They bring a unique dynamic to the game that can be both entertaining and frustrating for opponents. When you see one of these little powerhouses on the board, you know you’re in for a challenge. They’re not just there to absorb hits; they’re there to dish out a few of their own. With their hefty stature, they can hold their ground against larger opponents, making it difficult for anyone to push them around. It’s a delightful irony that these small beings can stand tall against the towering figures of the Blood Bowl universe.
Their role on the pitch is multifaceted. Sure, they can block and tackle with the best of them, but they bring so much more to the table. They can disrupt the flow of the game, creating chaos in the opposing team’s ranks. It’s all about that strategic placement, you see. A well-placed Hefty Lineman can effectively choke off passing lanes, making it difficult for the opposition to execute their plans. They thrive on the unpredictable nature of the game, often capitalising on the mistakes of their opponents.
Now, let’s dive into the nitty-gritty of their gameplay. If you’re playing as a Halfling team, you quickly learn that the Hefty Linemen are your best friends. They’re the kind of players who can turn the tide of a game with their combination of strength and surprising agility. While they may not always be the first to score, they’re instrumental in setting up plays and creating openings for their teammates. The ability to block, tackle, and disrupt is crucial in a game where every inch matters.
But let’s talk about that special something that makes the Hefty Linemen so endearing. There’s a certain charm to watching them lumber across the pitch, their belly bouncing with every step, a giant grin plastered on their faces as they prepare to take on opponents twice their size. It’s this underdog spirit that resonates with players and spectators alike. They embody the heart of Blood Bowl, where tenacity and spirit triumph over brute strength.
Of course, facing a Halfling team with Hefty Linemen can be a test of patience. You might think you have the upper hand, only to find your carefully constructed plans thwarted by a well-timed block from one of these pint-sized warriors. It’s infuriating, and that’s part of the fun! Their unpredictable nature keeps opponents on their toes, forcing them to adapt and rethink their strategies. Just when you think you’ve got the upper hand, a Hefty Lineman comes barreling in, turning the tide and reminding you that in Blood Bowl, anything can happen.
The camaraderie among Halfling teams is palpable, too. There’s a sense of unity that permeates the atmosphere, a feeling that these players are more than just teammates—they’re family. The Hefty Linemen are often the glue that holds the team together, sharing hearty laughs and celebrating even the smallest victories. They embody the spirit of teamwork, proving that sometimes, it’s not just about individual glory, but about lifting each other up and working together to achieve greatness.
Now, let’s take a moment to appreciate the strategic depth that these Hefty Linemen add to the game. They’re not just mindless bruisers; they require careful consideration and tactical placement. A skilled player knows how to utilise their strengths effectively, using them to create space, disrupt the opposition, and pave the way for their more agile teammates to shine. They’re a reminder that in Blood Bowl, the best strategies often come from unexpected places.
It’s worth noting that while the Hefty Linemen may not always be the flashiest players on the field, they certainly have a knack for stealing the spotlight in their own right. Their boisterous personalities and larger-than-life antics make them fan favourites, drawing cheers and laughter from the crowd. Whether they’re celebrating a successful block or sharing a hearty meal with teammates, they embody the spirit of fun that Blood Bowl is all about.
In terms of lore, the Hefty Linemen are often depicted as the embodiment of Halfling culture—joyful, hearty, and always ready for a good time. Their background is steeped in a love for food and community, where every match is a festival of camaraderie and sportsmanship. They bring a sense of lightheartedness to the often brutal world of Blood Bowl, reminding everyone that at its core, it’s just a game meant to be enjoyed.
So, as we wrap up our exploration of the Halfling Hefty Linemen, let’s take a moment to celebrate their unique place in the Blood Bowl universe. They may be small in stature, but they pack a punch in spirit and determination. They remind us that even the underdogs can rise to the occasion, and that teamwork, heart, and a little bit of chaos can lead to unexpected victories.
Next time you find yourself facing a Halfling team, remember to keep your wits about you. Those Hefty Linemen may just surprise you with their tenacity and charm. In the world of Blood Bowl, anything can happen, especially when you have a Hefty Lineman ready to charge into the fray with a grin and a belly full of hope. It’s moments like these that make Blood Bowl the beloved mayhem we all cherish, and it’s the Hefty Linemen who remind us that sometimes, the biggest heart can come in the smallest package.
That’s all I have for you this week but I will back next week with the final position that needs filling for the core halfing team. Until then I hope you keep safe and will see you back here, same time, same place next week.
